A visual exploration of wildlife, people, and places, through digital photography.

Photography has been a hobby of Randy's since he was in high school, and while Patti has always loved photography, it's only in the last couple of years that she has learned to use more than a simple Point and Shoot type camera. Since the advent of digital SLR cameras the time we've spent in pursuit of photography has really grown, and we've loved every minute.
As it is for so many people, the internet is our opportunity to share with family, with friends, and with the community of people everywhere, not just the images but the stories and experiences behind the images. That's really what it's all about.
Because we produce so many more photographic images with a digital camera than we ever would have with a conventional film camera, we've found ourselves sitting in front of a computer screen "developing" our digital images for what seems like as long as it used to take to get a roll of film back, negatives and prints, from the drugstore. I'm not sure I'd call that progress, but we enjoy it for the most part.
The galleries listed on the left are in no particular order.
Canada, Ireland, Tennessee, North Carolina, Louisiana and other states are represented in Far Away Places.
Texas Destinations may be the largest gallery on the site. So many of our favorite places are so close to us:
Our own backyard
We have taken down our eight birdseed feeders, two suet feeders, two corn-on-the-cob feeders
and pumpkin seed feeder for the squirrels. Only three hummingbird feeders and a few small
flowering shrubs for butterflies remain, so we don't see nearly as many birds now that we
used to. It's just as well because so much more of our photography time now is devoted to
football (Randy) and trips out of town (Patti).
Houston Zoo
Most of our Houston Zoo photos revolve around the many species of ducks and
shorebirds that inhabit Duck Lake, adjacent to the large, circular Duck Lake concession area;
Brazos Bend State Park
Brazos Bend is full of
wildlife - we've seen alligators, turtles, bullfrogs, javelina, deer, racoons, opposums,
nutria, several kinds of shorebirds and songbirds, big spiders, dragonflies, and butterflies
- most of which we have photographed. A great resource for anyone in the greater Houston area;
Galveston, High Island
Long-time residents of the Houston-Galveston area may not be aware of the huge variety of
birds inhabiting Galveston Island and the Bolivar Pennensula at various times of the year. A
late-March two-hour Galveston field trip by the Moody Gardens "Birding 201" class identified
35 species
of birds that included Kestrels, Kites, and Ospreys, Swallows, Stilts, and Shovelers, Egrets,
Kingfishers, and Oystercatchers.
Visiting the Houston Audubon Society's sanctuaries in the little town of High Island can be a boom or bust proposition, so it pays to educate yourself a little before driving out there. Another great resource.
Many other Texas Destinations are represented in this gallery, some public, some private.
For the Birds is another large gallery. One would think that getting plenty of good bird photos must be fairly easy when you have backyard feeders attracting hordes of birds all year long. All it takes is the right light, the right background, the right exposure settings, the right pose, lots of patience, and a well-timed press of the shutter button. Well, maybe a couple more shots with this other setting . . . hmmm, ok let's try this . . .
We have far fewer photos of Flowers than of birds, partly because of the seasonal nature of blooms.
